"The key to successful leadership today is influence, not authority,"
Who among you consider yourself as an influencer? Many hear the term influencer and think social media and number of followers and likes. However, I would go as far as to say we are all influencers to someone. Who are you influencing and how are you influencing them?
I Heard a story in Instagram about a postal worker that was a part time writer. His writing happened to be read by a small Publisher just starting out and went to go see this writer. He asked the author to quit his job and would pay him double his post office pay to write full time. He wrote his first book in just weeks about the post office life and many others to become a successful writer.
A young lady I work with went to go visit some Friends recently and was asked by her Friends what happened to her. They really never though she would go as far as she has gone. She told them that “someone told her she could do it”. Someone believed in her and told her to just keep going. She did and finished her bachelors degree while having two children, married, bought a home and maintained a full time job. Today she is working on her Masters degree and will likely complete her Ph.D. and become a laboratory director.
Alternately, I like to have my students from the IVF Academy to visit other laboratories to see how they flow, connect to other embryologists, grow their network and see that there are a lot of ways to IVF correctly. One of these students mentioned where she was going to work and the person showing her around the facility told her to give him a call after that program failed. What was his influence here? Was this a job offer? Did he suggest she would be better off working at his laboratory? Or simply telling her she was making a bad decision.
